Welcome to Hare in the Woods

Hare in the Woods is a delicatessen and French style traiteur nestled in the heart of the rural market town of Faringdon, Oxfordshire. Amongst the many fine foods, you will find freshly prepared meals, more cake than you eat, lunchtime tarts and our famous sausage roulade, all cooked in our shop with produce from our local area. Our shelves are stacked full of quality fine foods from local suppliers and with helping from our Spanish, French and Italian friends around the world. We stock a good range of gluten free foods – Lesley the owner is Gluten Free, so is always on the look out for stuff that actually tastes nice… and not like cardboard!

Noshing

Some say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That is why we have our French friends from La Parisienne, freshly baked and deliver our bread every morning, with a yummy selection of croissant, pain au chocolat, Boule paysanne, Pain de campagne, rye and Soughdough, in fact there is more than enough to shake a French stick at (and we have those too).

Have you succumbed to the famous Hare in the Woods Sausage Roulade for lunch… No? Well it is cooked every day and sold by the ‘chunk’. And If Sausage is not your thing then there is a rather nice vegetarian tart or tortilla - again prepared daily - always different, but always taste great! And perhaps a little string of cherry tomatoes to set everything off or a packet of Mr Trotters crisps. We also have some delicious drinks to quench your thirst like French lemonade or cold sparkling rhubarb and apple.

Meals

Taking our inspiration from a french style traiteur, we cook and make our meals in house on our lovely cooker… Classic dishes like pork Dijonnaise, beouf bourgignonne and chicken normande sit in the fridge alongside Thai green curry, tomatoey meatballs and curries. We also make soups, salads and our famous smoked mackerel pate, all of which are packed up in 1 and 2 portion tubs.

And for a helping hand for any level of entertaining we can create a bespoke menu to suit most anyone! So perhaps you could bring your own dish in to be filled with anything for a family supper like lasasgne, cottage or fish pie. Or go with a little more sophistication in your main with dishes like stuffed pork fillet wrapped in parma ham, chicken with cream lemon and tarragon or even an impressive beouf en croute. And we can create puddings too, like fresh fruit roulade, treacle tart or tart au citron. Really mostly anything!

Cake

We love cake, and so do most of our customers! That is why people keep coming back… All of our cakes are cooked in the shop using real ingredients – free range eggs from a farm 7 miles away and real packs of pure butter. No margarine insight here!

The choice is yours, we have a table laden with gluten free brownie, bread pudding, caramel shortbread, flapjack all cut into generous portions to buy singularly or in a selection box. You will find an abundance of loaf cakes filling the gaps - but if you would like the lemon drizzle, you had better get here early… Celebration cakes are on the bill too but so long as there is no white icing involved. Rustic vintage looking cakes decorated with fresh flowers or fruit, if that is what takes your fancy.

Delicatessen

Our delicatessen counter is not enormous but it is perfectly formed. Holding around 20 cheeses –many of the Award Winning– along with salamis, Provence olives, home cooked ham and pate, we think we have chosen some really great eats. The cheeses range from well known classics like Montgomery cheddar to lesser known beauties like Old Winchester. We have a few local cheeses too, but are always on the look out for more! The pate is made regularly using meat from our local butcher and is made to Lesley's French family recipe and Our ham is cooked slowly with just simply bay leaf, rosemary and peppercorns. And No need for large pre packs of anything, take as little or as much as you need. Cooking chorizo, ready to go meat selection packs and Serrano ham are also in our assortment and cheeses like feta, halloumi and buffalo mozarella.
